Things not seen by Andrew Clements
Mr. Mayo
Pd.2 Things not seen
By: Andrew Clements This book starts off with a kid named Bobby Phillips and he wakes up one morning to find that he is invisible. He leads a normal life in
Chicago and when ever he needs to go outside he just bundles up from head to toe and lets no one see invisibility. When he goes to the library he bumps into a girl that is blind and they become friends. He tells her that he is invisible and then her family finds out. Since Billy’s dad is a scientist he tries to come up with reasons for it happening. They figure out that the electric blanket he has been using is the problem. Billy and Alicia realize that since the blanket is malfunctioning then they should go to the Sears tower, because he bought it from Sears and there have been other malfunctioning blankets. Billy sneaks in behind Alicia then runs upstairs while Alicia distracts the others. Billy then goes up the stairs to find a computer that is already logged on. He prints out a list of people who had malfunctioning electric blankets. When he finds Alicia they go back out and home. Billy then calls 59 people of the list of 397. The last person call #59 is a man whose daughter disappeared the same way. Billy calls the daughter and they talk about how she became invisible three years earlier and that she was managing just fine. After talking to Alicia about double negatives, Billy figures out how to turn visible. He goes to sleep with the electric blanket over him. In the morning around 4:30 his mom is in the room and she sees Billy like he was three weeks earlier and he is visible. He calls Sheila, the daughter, and tells her how to become visible. Sheila says that she is fine being invisible and doesn’t want to go back. The protagonist in the story is Billy Phillips because it is about him turning invisible. The antagonist is Ms. Pagett because although I didn’t describe it, she is the one that is against believing Billy is in
Chicago, partly because his mom lied for him to not get the police involved in him missing.
I would really recommend this book to anyone especially those who like science fiction. It is a really good book that is written well and includes a lot of detail on how he managed to become visible again. I really liked this book and might read it again.
